Study Abroad Undergraduate Scholarships

Are you looking for scholarships to assist in financing your study abroad experience? You may be eligible to apply for a variety of scholarships available from the University of Illinois and other sources. Many study abroad scholarship applications are due more than one year before your term abroad, so it is important to begin your scholarship applications early.

Begin an application for the I4I (Illinois for Illinois) Scholarship or the IPS (International Programs and Studies) Scholarships.

Drafting Applications

Once you have selected the scholarship opportunities that you would like to apply for, it is time to begin drafting your essays and requesting your letters of recommendation, if required. Illinois' Office of Prestigious Scholarships offers helpful advice on crafting competitive applications and provides sample essays.

The National and International Scholarships Program (formerly The Office of Prestigious Scholarships) is available to assist you in revising applications for regionally or nationally competitive study abroad scholarships (those marked with an * on the scholarship listing, such as the Gilman, NSEP, or Rotary). Send your submission materials, including essays, as e-mail attachments to topscholars@illinois.edu and then schedule an appointment to discuss your draft. The Scholarships Program is generally able to meet with students within two or three days of when they submit their materials.

If you are applying for a scholarship offered through the University of Illinois, such as those provided through various colleges or through IPS, we suggest consulting the Writers Workshop and/or asking a peer to review your work.
