English Language Proficiency Verification

Each incoming exchange applicant will need to verify English language proficiency, per U.S. Department of State requirements, through assessment and documentation of English language ability.

Acceptable Methods of Assessment and Verification

A document indicating outcome of the interview; name, title and institution of person conducting the interview; and date and location

English Language Proficiency Verfication Form

Each incoming exchange applicant will need to upload the English Language Proficiency Verification Form into his/her electronic application. The Form must be filled out, signed and stamped by the Home University Exchange Coordinator. The appropriate verification document must accompany the form as part of the online application.

NOTE: The English Language Proficiency Verification Form still must be completed for the following students:

  • Students whose native language is English
  • Students who have successfully participated in a UIUC J program in the past

For these students, a supplemental language assessment and additional verification documents are not required.

The University of Illinois recognizes the following English language tests:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    Applicants who have already taken the TOEFL should request the Educational Testing Service send scores to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (institution code number 1836) or upload the ETS TOEFL Examinee Score Report directly to the online application.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    Applicants who have already taken the IELTS should upload their score report forms directly to the online application.

TOEFL or IELTS scores must be less than two years old from the first day of class for the proposed term of entry.

The College of Engineering requires a minimum TOEFL score of 100 IBT, or a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 total. 
The College of Media requires a minimum TOEFL score of 100 IBT, or a minimum IELTS score of 7.5 total with a minimum score of 7 on all four modules. 
The School of Social Work requires a minimum TOEFL score of 103 IBT, or a minimum IELTS score of 7.5 total with a minimum score of 7 on all four modules.

** Students will be expected to take the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign English Placement Test upon arrival on campus. The English Placement Test will determine whether you need to take a sequence of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.
